Laboratory of Democracy: Working with 8 Governors and 7 Mayors- Cancelled

Assembly Health Committee Chair Richard N. Gottfried '68, the NYS Legislature's longest serving member, will talk about his work in Albany and his Manhattan district and the fight for a single payer health plan.

Richard N. Gottfried Ď68 was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1970 and is its longest-serving Member ever.  His district includes Chelsea, Hellís Kitchen, Midtown and parts of Kips Bay and Lincoln Square.

He has chaired the Health Committee since 1987 and is a leading state health policy-maker.  He authored NYís medical marijuana law and sponsors the NY Health Act to create single-payer health coverage for every New Yorker.   An architect of NY's landmark managed care reforms, he continues to fight for stronger protections for consumers and health care providers.

An advocate in the Legislature for civil liberties, reproductive freedom and LGBT rights, Gottfried was the original sponsor of the same-sex marriage bill, and sponsors the bill to outlaw transgender discrimination. He authored the bill establishing the Hudson River Park, and pioneered legislation to recognize and protect crime victims.

Gottfried holds a J.D. from Columbia Law School.   He and his wife Louise live in Lincoln Square, where they raised their son, Michael.
