A Dangerously Weak China with Gordon Chang ’76
What’s far more dangerous than a strong China? A weak and failing one.
For more than three decades, the primary basis of legitimacy of the ruling Communist Party has been economic growth. Now that the once-surging economy is tumbling toward crisis, the country’s rulers are increasingly relying on militant nationalism to stay in power.
As a result, they are lashing out in an arc, from India in the south to South Korea in the north. At the same time, Beijing is challenging the U.S. on the high seas and in international airspace, restricting freedom of navigation in the South China and East China Seas. China is on a collision course with the world.
Gordon Chang is the author of The Coming Collapse of China and Nuclear Showdown: North Korea Takes on the World; he is also a contributor at Forbes.com and blogs at World Affairs Journal.
