Join us on a walk across the "Great Bridge" -- once the longest suspension bridge in the world --  as we learn about its creation and early history. We'll discuss the work of the Roebling family, the designers of the bridge, and the sacrifice and dramatic story of the immigrant workers who built it. Then it's off to the Heights, covering the transition of the area from wealthy Victorian suburb to literary haven. Stops include the church, where Lincoln and Walt Whitman worshiped; a stop on the Underground Railroad used to free slaves; Borough Hall, once the City Hall of Brooklyn; the place where Jackie Robinson and Sandy Koufax were signed and where the Dodgers got their name; the Truman Capote residence where he penned Breakfast at Tiffany's; and the home of Arthur Miller, where he courted Marilyn Monroe. We end at the Brooklyn Promenade to view the magnificent Manhattan skyline at twilight -- only steps from Grimaldi's Pizza, the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, The River Cafe and the restaurants and cafes of Montague Street.

Meet at the statue of Ben Franklin at the corner of Spruce Street and Park Row in Lower Manhattan. The statue is in front of Pace University and to the right of the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. Subway: 4,5,6 to Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall station.

$30 per person. Advance registration required by Thursday, September 4th at which point all reservations are final.
